Although he didn’t see much of the possession storyline as it originally aired, he stuck around to try to figure out what the hell all that was about. In his efforts, he got sucked in to the rest of the stories. A young girl, Sami Brady, was hell bent on stopping the impending wedding of Austin Reed and and her half-sister, Carrie Brady. She ended up crashing the wedding, “fainting,” and revealed that she was 5 months pregnant and Austin was the daddy. Suffice it to say, the wedding was called off.
Elsewhere, Alice Horton eagerly watched as “Gina” successfully opened Tom Horton’s puzzlebox, thus proving that she is actually Alice’s presumed-dead granddaughter, Hope Williams Brady.
Meanwhile at the pier, Billie (played by future TV personality Lisa Rinna) returned home to the Fancy Face boat and was greeted by her fiancé, Bo Brady (as played by the newly returned Peter Reckell). Bo would soon learn that his dead wife, Hope, was in fact alive.
Across town, Tony DiMera (or was it really Andre?) was determined to win back his beloved soon-to-be ex-wife, Kristen Blake. Kristen was now with John Black (who had just given up the priesthood after successfully exorcising the devil out of his ex-wife, Marlena), and Tony plotted to have John killed so that he and Kristen would be reunited. (Later, Tony was diagnosed with an incurable fatal illness and decided to kill himself and frame John for his own death so that John and Kristen would spend eternity apart).
Alice’s other granddaughter, Jennifer Rose, was happily engaged to Peter Blake (Kristen’s brother), but the living situation was awkward. Her ex-husband, Jack Deveraux, owned half the house, and all three of them lived together, along with Jack & Jennifer’s daughter, until the situation could be sorted out.
At the hospital, Dr. Marlena Evans, fresh from her stint being demonically possessed, was back to work as a psychiatrist. There, she discovered that her long-time nemesis and persecutor, Stefano DiMera, was wheelchair-bound and suffering amnesia after falling from a high-rise balcony. Stefano had been thrown off the balcony by Marlena while she was possessed. Feeling guilty, she decided Stefano would convalesce at her home, since she had put him in that unfortunate predicament in the first place.
Other Salem mainstays included Abe & Lexie Carver… Lexie’s “Aunt Frankie”/Celeste (who turned out to be Lexie’s bio mom)… Vivian Alamain and her partner-in-crime, Ivan… Victor Kiriakis, a reformed bad guy whom Vivian schemed to seduce… Maggie & Mickey Horton… Caroline & Shawn Brady… Lucas Roberts (Sami’s partner in crime) and Jamie Caldwell (Sami’s best friend)… Abe’s younger brother, Jonah, and his longtime girlfriend, Wendy… Jennifer’s brother, Mike Horton, a doctor… Plus, the aforementioned Alice Horton, who as the matriarch of the show, had been a part of the action since day one in 1965.
…And so, the 12-year-old boy who had innocently been watching Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel one hot, summer day in July, 1995 became hooked on the goings on in Salem, USA. Throughout the next twenty years, he saw everything from amnesia, to mind control, to computer chips in the head, to a dozen people bludgeoned to death (only to turn up alive 6 months later on a secret island that looked exactly like Salem, only with palm trees), baby switches, kidnappings, affairs, “who’s the daddy?”, betrayal, blackmail, miraculous plastic surgeries, love, death, murder, and more. Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives!
